Yahoo News:TEHRAN, Iran – Security forces and militiamen clashed with thousands of protesters shouting „death to the dictator“ outside Tehran University on Monday, beating them with batons and firing tear gas on a day of nationwide student demonstrations, witnesses said.

The protests were the largest in months, bringing tens of thousands out in marches at more than a dozen campuses around the country and in several squares in Tehran, as university students — a bedrock of support for the pro-reform movement — sought to energize the opposition. The opposition has been reeling under a fierce crackdown since turmoil erupted over the disputed presidential election in June.

Thousands of riot police, Revolutionary Guard forces and pro-government Basij militiamen flooded the area around Tehran University since the morning, vowing to prevent any unrest from spilling out into the streets.

Hey, this is fun, a whole lot more fun than when they shout, Death to America he?

Zugegeben, die Eidgenossen haben sich durch das mit ihrer „Unsere Moschee soll nicht schöner werden“-Initiative verbundene Pläydoyer gegen die Religionsfreiheit selbst ein geistiges Armutszeugnis ausgestellt (wobei ihre deutschen Nachbarn da kaum anders entschieden hätten, die fragt man nur vorsichtshalber nicht). Aber das hier ist trotzdem eine Frechheit:

Im saudi-arabischen Dschiddah forderte die Organisation der Islamischen Konferenz (OIC) Muslime in aller Welt zu einer „friedlichen und demokratischen Reaktion“ auf. In dieser Organisation sind 57 islamische Länder vertreten. Ihr Generalsekretär Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu nannte das Ergebnis der Abstimmung „enttäuschend und beunruhigend“. Es sei das jüngste Beispiel für das Schüren von Angst vor dem Islam durch fremdenfeindliche Politiker, sagte der aus der Türkei stammende Ihsanoglu. Die westlichen Gesellschaften befänden sich in der Geiselhaft von Extremisten, die Muslime als Sündenböcke ausnutzten, um an die Macht zu gelangen. Er sagte, das Minarettverbot sei eine „bedauerliche Entwicklung, die das Bild der Schweiz als ein die Pluralität, Religionsfreiheit und Menschenrechte achtendes Land trübt“.

Soso, im saudi-arabischen Dschiddah also. Das ist da, wo man nicht nur keine Kirchtürme bauen darf, sondern nicht mal die dazugehörige Kirche, und wo sogar der christliche Koran verboten ist. Aber schön zu wissen, daß der Begriff Islamofaschismus damit de facto nicht nur von neokonservativen Scharfmachern, sondern endlich auch von prominenten Muslimen verwendet wird. „Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit“ gibt es eben nicht nur in der Schweiz.

Während beim SPIEGEL jede noch so absurde Beschuldigung gegenüber den USA oder Israel in der Regel erst mal unwidersprochen abgedruckt wird, enthalten Artikel zum Atomstreit mit dem Iran seit Jahren meist eine Art Disclaimer, der im Laufe einer Woche ungefähr so aussieht:

Das hatte sich Barack Obama vermutlich anders vorgestellt. Die Nato-Partner haben wenig Lust, der Forderung des US-Präsidenten nach mehr Truppen in Afghanistan nachzukommen: Frankreich will nur Ausbilder entsenden, Italien weniger Soldaten schicken als erwartet, die Türkei verzögert einen Beschluss.

Aber nicht vergessen, es lag immer nur an Bush!

Im Nahen Osten tobt seit Wochen ein Krieg (so richtig das volle Programm mit Panzern, Artillerie und Jagdbombern) und niemanden interessiert’s. Da kämpft eine komplette und zunehmend wachsende Allianz arabischer Staaten, aber zur Abwechslung mal nicht gegen Israel, sondern gegen eine weitere Stellvertretermiliz des Iran. Und Amman, Riad, Sanaa oder Teheran sind ja bekanntlich weder auf der Landkarte des UN-Sicherheitsrats vorhanden, noch haben unsere Qualitätsmedien irgendwelche Korrespondenten in der Region.

Aber wer weiß, vielleicht feuert ja ein US-Kriegsschiff demnächst ja einen Schuß auf einen iranischen Waffenschmuggler ab. Spätestens dann werden wir auch im GEZ-Fernsehen davon erfahren, und sei es nur, daß die tumben Amis mal wieder unbedacht Öl ins Feuer gießen und durch eine derartige Eskalation die Lunte an ein Pulverfaß legen, wodurch sie Gefahr laufen einen Flächenbrand im Mittleren Osten auszulösen. Was Otto Normalzuschauer vorbehaltlos glauben wird, denn zur Zeit herrscht dort ja Frieden.

BRASÍLIA — Brazil’s ambitions to be a more important player on the global diplomatic stage are crashing headlong into the efforts of the United States and other Western powers to rein in Iran’s nuclear arms program.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazil’s president, is set to receive Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, here on Monday in his first state visit to Brazil. The visit is part of a larger push by Mr. da Silva to wade into the seemingly intractable world of Middle East politics, and follows visits in the last two weeks by Israel’s president, Shimon Peres, and Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority.

But the visit is drawing criticism from lawmakers and former diplomats here and in the United States, who say it could undercut Western efforts to press Iran on its nuclear program, and consequently chill Brazil’s relations with the United States and damage its growing reputation as a global power.

…“This state visit is a gross error, a terrible mistake,” said Representative Eliot L. Engel, Democrat of New York, chairman of the House Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere. “He is illegitimate with his own people, and Brazil is now going to give him the air of legitimacy at a time when the world is trying to figure out how to prevent Iran from having nuclear weapons. It makes no sense to me, and it tarnishes the image of Brazil, quite frankly.”

But stop, hold on! If it is good enough for President Obama, why not Da Silva? Or so says the State Department:

But Mr. da Silva’s overture to Iran is consistent with President Obama’s policy of engagement, and the Obama administration says it is optimistic that the meeting will not damage and at best could reinforce the efforts already under way by Washington and European powers to deal with Iran.

“We would hope that all our friends and allies would understand that this is really a critical moment for Iran itself,” Ian C. Kelly, a State Department spokesman, said Thursday. “We would hope that Brazil would play a constructive role in trying to get Iran to do the right thing and fulfill its international obligations.”

Criticize their policies academically and intelligently and discuss the Bush presidency in historical and political terms…but you mess with the Bushes personally and, from this day forward, you’ll answer to us.

We hope someday to be able to thank George W. and Laura in person for all they’ve done, and continue to do. They didn’t have to head to Ft. Hood. That was not their responsibility.

Brachial? Weil man versucht, gegnerische Truppen aufzuspüren, um sie zu bekämpfen? Da wäre es interessant zu erfahren, wer der ranghöchste ex-Soldat ist, der in der SPIEGEL-Redaktion arbeitet. Und warum der nur Bürobote ist und nicht dafür zuständig, den Erfindern solch kreativer Titelzeilen die Ohren langzuziehen.

[...] Mehrfach kam es wegen unangekündigter und teils sehr harter Zugriffe oder gezielter Tötungen zu Reibereien zwischen deutschen und US-Militärs.

Eine zivilisierte Armee sollte im Krieg eigentlich grundsätzlich nur gezielte Tötungen durchführen. Ungezielte Tötungen enden nämlich ganz schnell in einem Kriegsverbrechen oder aber zumindest mit unverhältnismäßig großen Kollateralschäden. Und ob der SPIEGEL die wirklich will, darf dann doch bezweifelt werden.

Are the CIC kidding me? Camp David? What, does he have a tee time close by? For god sakes, he’s the CIC. And he’s taking the weekend off? This guy simply doesn’t care.

On the other hand, President Bush visited Fort Hood with his wife Laura and no camera crew, unlike when President Phony Oabama went to Dover AFB in the middle of the night for a photo op.

Combine this jovial “It’s all about me” attitude He showed in effectively dissing those killed at Fort Hood in His speech the other night, mentioning it almost as an aside after giving a “shout out” from the ‘hood to His homeboy, you can see the real contempt and disregard He feels for the men and women in the U.S. military.

Die Türkei hat sich im Atomstreit mit Iran zu Wort gemeldet. Ministerpräsident Erdogan fordert: Der Westen könne der Islamischen Republik nur dann mit Sanktionen drohen, wenn er selbst seine Atomwaffen abgebe.

Fein gemacht, Obambi! Nicht mal ein Jahr im Amt, und schon ist ein einstmals treuer und nicht gänzlich unwichtiger NATO-Alliierter offenbar der Meinung, daß der Wind in Zukunft aus Richtung Osten weht. Wenn schon der große Bruder in Washington durchblicken läßt, sich mit einer Atommacht Iran abzufinden, dann ist es Erdogan nicht mal zu verdenken, daß er die Zeichen der Zeit erkennt und sich prophylaktisch mit dem als stärker bzw. gefährlicher wahrgenommenen Nachbarn arrangiert.

Daß die Türkei, die ihr Überleben jahrzehntelang nicht zuletzt dem amerikanischen Nuklearschirm verdankt, sich jetzt sicherer fühlt, wenn eben dieser Schirm eingeklappt wird, symbolisiert den verfehlten Ansatz von Obamas Außenpolitik wohl mehr als alles andere. Angesichts dieses historischen Versagens des amtierenden US-Präsidenten wagt man ja nicht mal mehr von Bush oder auch nur Reagan oder Kennedy zu träumen. Man wäre inzwischen schon froh, wenn man wenigstens Carter zurückbekäme.

Exactly. Pakistan at least had the point of being run by people who weren’t willing, for instance, to see half or more of their people dead in the name of killing so called infidel; North Korea has been run for decades by first-class communist dirtbag murderers, and nobody likes them but nobody wants to deal with them, either. And if the mullahs in Iran pop a couple of nukes at Israel, the EU(nuchs) and company will whine and moan and I’d estimate at 90%+ that they’ll actually do nothing. And Iran knows it.

Hell, President Obama doesn’t even like the word ‘victory’ when he’s the CIC of American troops in battle; does anyone actually think he has the balls, integrity or will to stand up to Iran?

The Obama administration really needs to get over itself.

First, the president and his aides go to war with Fox News because the network maintains a generally anti-Obama slant.

Then, an anonymous administration aide attacks bloggers for failing to maintain a sufficiently pro-Obama slant.

These are not disconnected developments.

An administration that won the White House with an almost always on-message campaign and generally friendly coverage from old and new media is now frustrated by its inability to control the debate and get the coverage it wants.

Political commentator Charles Krauthammer delivers this great column in the Weekly Standard last week.
Mr. Krauthammer recognizes that American decline is not a new theory and that foreign affairs is a zero sum, and deadly, game. The Soviets saw weakness in President Kennedy and acted which spawned the Cuban Missile Crisis. They saw it again in President Carter and invaded Afghanistan, stirred up trouble in Nicaragua, Angola, and Ethiopia.
US decline seems to arise whenever the Democrats control Washington, unsurprisingly. US decline is not inevitable, and the rise of India and China does not necessarily mean that the power of the USA has been diminished.

The corollary to unchosen European collapse was unchosen American ascendancy. We–whom Lincoln once called God’s „almost chosen people“–did not save Europe twice in order to emerge from the ashes as the world’s co-hegemon. We went in to defend ourselves and save civilization. Our dominance after World War II was not sought. Nor was the even more remarkable dominance after the Soviet collapse. We are the rarest of geopolitical phenomena: the accidental hegemon and, given our history of isolationism and lack of instinctive imperial ambition, the reluctant hegemon–and now, after a near-decade of strenuous post-9/11 exertion, more reluctant than ever.

Which leads to my second proposition: Facing the choice of whether to maintain our dominance or to gradually, deliberately, willingly, and indeed relievedly give it up, we are currently on a course towards the latter. The current liberal ascendancy in the United States–controlling the executive and both houses of Congress, dominating the media and elite culture–has set us on a course for decline. And this is true for both foreign and domestic policies. Indeed, they work synergistically to ensure that outcome.

The Democrats seem to prize multilateralism above victory in war, security at home, or stability around the world. This is why the UN is given such preeminence by the left. Mr. Krauthammer ridicules such naive idealism in international institutions riddled with corruption:

The president then denounced the idea of elevating any group of nations above others–which takes care,
I suppose, of the Security Council, the G-20, and the Western alliance. And just to make the point unmistakable, he denounced „alignments of nations rooted in the cleavages of a long-gone Cold War“ as making „no sense in an interconnected world.“ What does that say about NATO? Of our alliances with Japan and South Korea? Or even of the European Union?

This is nonsense. But it is not harmless nonsense. It’s nonsense with a point. It reflects a fundamental view that the only legitimate authority in the international system is that which emanates from „the community of nations“ as a whole. Which means, I suppose, acting through its most universal organs such as, again I suppose, the U.N. and its various agencies. Which is why when Obama said that those who doubt „the character and cause“ of his own country should see what this new America–the America of the liberal ascendancy–had done in the last nine months, he listed among these restorative and relegitimizing initiatives paying up U.N. dues, renewing actions on various wholly vacuous universalist declarations and agreements, and joining such Orwellian U.N. bodies as the Human Rights Council.

Die Welt steht am Rande eines erneuten antisemitischen Stahlgewitters. Kann es da Hoffnung geben? Kim Jong-Il oder Ahmadinejad, Chavez oder Bin Laden, das sind nur lebendige Auswüchse des globalen Behemoths, des globalen Todestriebes, der erst die Juden dann sich selbst zu vernichten sucht und geil darauf ist sein eigenes Glied zu verspeisen. Am eigenem Widerspruch wird das Unwesen untergehen, das stand schon vor seiner Geburt fest, was aber nicht feststeht ist der Todeskampf dem es aus ficht. Der Kurs seines Todestanzes dem „es“ einschlägt. Die Gattung steht vor der Entscheidung. Die Spaltung die einst vor Äonen vor Jahren begann ist auf ihrem Höhepunkt. Doch anders als Marx es erwartete steht nicht die Weltrevolution an der Tagesordnung, nicht der alberne Kampf zweier Klassen bevor, das hat sich ins undefinierbare verzogen, evtl. endgültig erledigt. Es steht etwas an was keiner ahnte. Der Krieg des sozialen Es gegen das soziale Ich, der Kampf zwischen Gesellschaft und Gemeinschaft. Zwischen Horde und Staat, der zwischen Leviathan und Behemoth. Marx konnte niemals wissen, dass all die bisherige Geschichte nicht der Kampf zwischen Klassen war, sondern etwas grundsätzlicher, der zwischen Es und Ich. Meister und Sklave sind nur Formen dieses Krieges.
Was bleibt übrig? Hoffnung auf eine neue Runde? Oder aber die Zuversicht, dass der IDF das gelingt, was dem Proletariat verwehrt blieb, nämlich die Aufklärung militant durchzusetzen und Bedienungen zu Schaffen für eine wahrhaft menschliche Welt. Keine perfekte Welt, aber zumindest im bestem bürgerlichem Sinne eine freie Welt. Besser als Nichts.

No it was not a hoax. Early Friday morning, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that President Barack Obama would receive a consolation prize for namely the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

Here in my humble “around the Corner coffee shop”, my first reaction was, naturally, to spew coffee on my Netbook . My second reaction was to wonder, for what?
There’s been no signing of peace treaties, no stopping of nuclear proliferation, no ending of wars. President Obama hasn’t stood up for human rights in China, hasn’t denounced the oppression of women in the some special parts of the world and hasn’t stared down brutal dictators such as Castro, Chavez, Kim and Ahmadinejad.
Again, I ask me: For what?

The Nobel Committee explains that it was „his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,“ and the fact that he has „created a new climate in international politics.“ Didn’t former VP Al Gore get the award two years ago for seeking to stop climate change?

Mr. Jagland, chairman of the Nobel Committee, gushed,

„Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future.“ In other words, it was the Nobel Prize for Narcissism. Unfortunately, the committee did not pass out barf bags prior to the announcement.

Apparently, the fact that the community organizer took up residence in the White House less than two weeks before Feb. 1 2009 nomination deadline was not as important to the committee as being able to give a slap in the face to his resolute predecessor, George W. Bush.
It certainly sends a message against actually winning in Afghanistan or brings down dictatorship in the World.

The president joins other you’ve-got-to-be-kidding winners Jimmy Carter , who is largely responsible for present-day Iran, Gore, who does nothing but scare people about global warming, and Palestinian terrorist Yasser Arafat, who assumed room temperature in 2004.
